ree

What It Is, Who Qualifies, and How to Get It

Many families are unaware that the United States offers a free lifetime National Park pass for people with permanent disabilities. This pass removes financial barriers and makes it easier for individuals and families to enjoy nature, outdoor recreation, and national treasures together.

Below is a clear explanation of the program, eligibility requirements, and how to apply.

What Is the Access Pass?

The America the Beautiful – Access Pass is a free lifetime pass issued by the U.S. federal government to individuals with permanent disabilities.

The pass provides access to:

  • National Parks

  • National Wildlife Refuges

  • National Forests

  • National Seashores

  • National Monuments

  • Other federal recreation lands

This pass is valid at more than 2,000 federal recreation sites nationwide.

What Does the Pass Cover?

The Access Pass provides:

  • Free entry for the pass holder

  • Free entry for passengers in the same vehicle at sites that charge per vehicle

  • Free or reduced fees for certain amenities such as camping, swimming, and boat launching (varies by site)

Important to note:

  • The pass covers entrance fees only

  • It does not cover special tours, concessions, or privately operated facilities

Who Is Eligible?

You may qualify for the Access Pass if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and

  • You have a permanent disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities

The disability does not have to be visible. Eligibility includes physical, sensory, intellectual, and developmental disabilities.

What Proof Is Required?

You do not need to share a diagnosis. Acceptable documentation includes one of the following:

  • A statement from a licensed physician

  • Documentation from a federal or state agency (such as Social Security Disability benefits)

  • A disability placard or card issued by a government agency

The documentation must confirm a permanent disability, but it does not need to include medical details.

How to Get the Pass

There are two ways to obtain the Access Pass:

Option 1: In Person (Recommended)

  • Visit a participating national park or federal recreation site

  • Present your documentation and a photo ID

  • Receive the pass immediately and for free

Option 2: Online

  • Apply through the official U.S. Geological Survey website

  • A small processing fee is charged for mailing

  • The pass will be mailed to you

Why This Pass Matters

Access to outdoor spaces supports:

  • Physical and mental well-being

  • Family bonding

  • Inclusion and community participation

For many individuals with disabilities, cost and lack of information are real barriers. This program exists to ensure equal access to nature and public lands.

A Note for Caregivers and Families

While the Access Pass is issued to the individual with a disability, it often allows families to experience parks together, especially when entering by vehicle.

This makes it an excellent resource for:

  • Families raising children with disabilities

  • Adult caregivers

  • Seniors with permanent disabilities

Help Spread the Word

Many eligible families never hear about this program. Sharing this information can help remove barriers and create more inclusive outdoor experiences.

If you or someone you care for qualifies, we strongly encourage applying.

Helpful Tip

Always check the specific park’s website for details on accessibility features, amenities, and fee reductions, as offerings may vary by location.

Together, we can make access to nature more inclusive.
