Community Connection
Families raising children with disabilities often face barriers to participating in community activities, including high costs, sensory challenges, limited accessibility information, and lack of inclusive design. These barriers can lead to isolation for both children and caregivers.
AJ Family Support Foundation’s Community Connection program focuses on Las Vegas–based, welcoming, sensory-aware group outings that bring families together for shared community experiences while reducing financial and access barriers when possible.
This program was created by parents and professionals who understand firsthand the experiences of raising and supporting children with disabilities. By bringing families together in inclusive environments, these gatherings help build community, strengthen family connections, and create opportunities for caregivers to connect with others who understand their journey.
Why Group Outings Matter
Inclusive group outings can:
• Reduce social isolation for families and caregivers
• Provide opportunities for peer connection with others who understand disability-related challenges
• Increase confidence engaging in community spaces
• Support caregiver wellbeing and emotional resilience
• Strengthen family relationships by allowing siblings and caregivers to participate together
Families raising children with disabilities often develop valuable knowledge through lived experience. Shared outings create natural opportunities for caregivers to exchange practical ideas, strategies, and encouragement with others navigating similar journeys.
By focusing on shared experiences rather than formal presentations, this program prioritizes connection, inclusion, and participation.
How the Program Works
AJ Family Support Foundation works to:• Identify inclusive or sensory-aware opportunities at Las Vegas–area community attractions
• Partner with community organizations when possible
• Use available funding to reduce participation barriers such as admission costs or accessibility supports
• Invite families from the interest list based on availability, location, and access considerations
• Facilitate shared community outings where families participate together
Optional feedback may be collected to help improve future programming.
